The Manning legacy appears to be in safe custody with its latest quarterback sensation, Arch Manning. At merely 19 years old, he showcased a performance befitting the prestigious Manning name in Texas Longhorns’ emphatic 56-7 triumph over the UTSA Roadrunners this past Saturday.
Arch Manning, the nephew of iconic NFL figures Peyton and Eli, both Super Bowl champions with four titles and three Super Bowl MVP accolades collectively, carries the weight of high expectations. His legendary uncles not only claimed the coveted No. 1 spot in their respective NFL drafts but also cemented themselves as legends in the game.
Sharing his name with his grandfather, the revered Archie Manning, another former NFL quarterback, young Arch seems to embrace the burden of expectation with grace. His remarkable contribution to five Longhorn touchdowns in this monumental victory set a record not seen since 2006 for a freshman quarterback at the university.
Manning entered the fray in the second quarter, replacing starting quarterback Quinn Ewers, who exited the field due to injury. The redshirt freshman didn’t merely fill the gap but thrived, throwing for 223 yards and completing nine of his 12 passes, including four touchdown throws.
However, it wasn’t just his aerial proficiency that mesmerized the crowd of 101,892. Manning also showcased his agility on the ground, rushing for 67 yards, culminating in a spectacular touchdown that left defenders trailing in his wake, further inflating the Longhorns’ scoreboard.
"You can never predict when a backup will be called upon," said Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian during the postgame press conference, praising Manning’s poise and capability.
Though backups practice diligently, Sarkisian emphasized that stepping into a live game is an entirely different challenge.
"There's nothing like the real thing—playing in front of over 100,000 fans isn’t exactly an easy task. I couldn’t be prouder of Arch and his composure," Sarkisian added.
A much-ballyhooed prospect, Manning’s talent, combined with his famous surname, has long marked him for football greatness. Prior to committing to Texas, Arch shattered his high school’s records for career passing yards and touchdowns in 2022, eclipsing the marks previously set by his uncles, Eli and Peyton.
With Quinn Ewers likely facing time on the sidelines, Arch Manning could be primed for more opportunities to lead the Longhorns in upcoming games.
